High Elf Army Overview
The High Elves are an ancient people with a history that spans millennia. While the ancestors of man were little more than cave-dwelling primitives, the Elves built magnificent cities of glittering silver and white marble on their island home of Ulthuan. Elven scholars and explorers were the first to chart the stars and sail the world's oceans. The Elves were also the first race to mount an organized defense against the invading hordes of Chaos, beginning a war that continues to the present day
Early in their struggles against the Ruinous Powers, the Elves discovered that negative emotions such as fear, rage, jealousy and greed serve to fuel and strengthen the power of Chaos. Since that time, the High Elves have struggled to keep their intense passions tightly under control. Though intelligent and enlightened, all Elves have the capacity for savage violence.. In order to suppress this dangerous and unpredictable aspect of their psyche, the lords of Ulthuan continually strive to eliminate all extremes of emotion; in High Elf society, to surrender to anger or lust is to show weakness. As a result, the High Elves live by a strict regimen of rules and codes and embrace a way of life that emphasizes harmony, balance and inner peace.
Magic is the lifeblood of the High Elves. With millennia to hone their skills, it is little wonder that the Mages of Ulthuan are among the most powerful practitioners of magic in the world. Their thoughtful, meticulous approach to the study of combat, coupled with their patience and mental discipline makes the High Elves deadly fighters, as well. On the battlefield, High Elf swordsmen are graceful, lithe, and lethal when they detect a weakness in their adversaries.
The High Elves will need all of their wisdom and skill if they are to survive the Age of Reckoning. When Finubar, Phoenix King and ruler of Ulthuan, gathers his finest warriors and sets sail for the Old World to aid the beleaguered Empire, he is unaware that he and his allies are pawns in an elaborate plot designed to leave Ulthuan vulnerable to an invasion. As Finubar's fleet of longships pass beyond the horizon, vast shadows fall across the island of Ulthuan. The skies are darkened by a great swarm of Black Arks laden with hateful Dark Elf warriors seeking to reclaim their ancestral home and destroy forever their despised cousins, the High Elves.

High Elf History
In times barely remembered by the High Elves, they were hunted and persecuted by demons of chaos. A champion named Aenarion, tested and proven to be strong of heart by sacrificing himself and emerging from the sacred flame unharmed, led the Asur against the demonic invaders. The sacred flame was used to test every Phoneix King that followed Aenarion, those who emerged unharmed were worthy of the crown. The High Elves felt as though they drew strength from their beautiful land of Ulthuan. With that strength and the might of Aenarion, the elves pushed the forces of Chaos from Ulthuan, and the Golden Age of elves began. This period was the only time in the long history of High Elves when their numbers increased.
Chaos eventually returned to the lands of the High Elves and slew the mother of Aenarion's children, the Everqueen. Aenarion became so enraged that he fought with great ferocity against the forces of Chaos. Amongst his many triumphs, he freed a high elven woman, Morathi, from Chaos cultists. Unfortunately, she had been tainted by her time spent with the worshipers of the Chaos gods, though she hid it well. Morathi bore Aenarion a child, Malekith, whose name would go down in infamy amongst the High Elves. Eventually, Aenarion was lost in an epic battle with the Daemons who threatened Ulthuan. He gave the High Elves a time of peace from the onslaught of the forces of Chaos, but left them leaderless.
The High Elven council, desiring peace, decided not to select Malekith, the lone remaining son of Aenarion as the new Phoenix King. They felt he was tainted by his exposure to his father's battle rage, and the pain from losing his father in battle. Instead they chose Bel-Shanaar, a mighty warrior in his own right, to be the new King.
This decision was followed by a period of peace for the High Elves. Bel-Shanaar's leadership led the Asur to explore, and colonize much of the world beyond Ulthuan. They forged a friendship and strong trading bond with the Dwarfs. Malekith, still a mighty and trusted warrior, was selected by Bel-Shanaar to be ambassador to the Dwarfs. Together the two races pushed back a Chaos invasion.
It was many years later before the forces of Chaos returned again. The peace and prosperity experienced by the High Elves brought complacency. The lack of vigilance allowed Chaos to creep back into the world. Chaos took the form of the new cult of Slaanesh, God of Pleasure. The leader of the cult was Morathi, mother of Malekith. As widower of Aenarion she could attract many followers to her cult. Their sacrifices and rituals disturbed the tranquility amongst the High Elves. When Malekith returned from travels abroad, he condemned his mother and began "the great purge."
Malekith used the great purge as a way to eliminate High Elves he found undesireable. Eventually Malekith turned his wrath on Bel-Shanaar himself, poisioning him, and murdering his council. Malekith then stepped into the sacred flame to prove he was ready for ascension, but the flame burned him badly. His mother took his scarred body and fled with their followers far to the west. Many High Elves hoped his evil would never return to the land of Ulthuan.
With the crown of the Phoenix King vacant, the High Elves looked to the brother of Bel-Shanaar, Imrik, for leadership. He accepted the crown, and took the name Caledor for himself. Just before Caledor's wedding to the Everqueen, Malekith returned and laid claim to the throne. He claimed Caledor was a false king, and a puppet of the High Council. There was a civil war amongst the High Elves, between the faction backing Caledor, and the faction backing Malekith. Eventually the High Elves backing Caledor were victorious, but Malekith's dark magic put a strain on Ulthuan. If not for great efforts taken by the mages of the High Elves the isle would have been lost. Malekith fled the land of Ulthuan, and now his followers (known as Dark Elves) are many, and the High Elves find themselves perpetually facing the threat of war.
It was many years later, during the reign of the Phoenix King Caledor II that a dispute between the High Elves and Dwarfs broke out. Malekith sought to disrupt the friendly relations between the High Elves and the Dwarfs.
Under the direction of Malekith, the Dark Elves attacked a Dwarf caravan. The Dwarfs, being unfamiliar with Dark Elves, mistook them for High Elves and sent an emissary to demand compensation for their loss from the Phoenix King. The Emissary was quite rude, even swearing by his beard he would not leave without an answer, and drawing his weapon in anger. The High Elves threw him out, after shaving his beard. The Dwarfs were so enraged that they brought their armies to bear in a conflict the High Elves would know as, "The War of the Beard."
When the Dwarf armies arrived, Caledor attempted to resolve the conflict by dealing directly with Snorri Halfhand, the leader of the Dwarf army that marched against him. The Dwarf would not listen to reason, and attacked. Caledor killed the Dwarf prince. Morgrim, Snorri's cousin, marched the Dwarfs to battle again, seeking vengeance. After a lengthy onslaught, he slew Imralik, a High Elf prince. Eventually the war of the beard ended when through deceit the Dwarfs gained access to the High Elf capital. The Dwarf High King Gotrek Starbreaker killed the Phoenix King, and the Dwarfs took his crown as their trophy. The animosity between the High Elves and Dwarfs has never dissipated.
High Elf Political Structure
The High Elves of Ulthuan live under two esteemed co-rulers, the Phoenix King and the Everqueen. The current Phoenix King is Finubar. He is known as "the Seafarer." Under his rule, trade has been very prosperous for the High Elves. Alarielle is the current Everqueen and co-ruler of Ulthuan. The Everqueen is said to be the chosen representative of the Elven Goddes, Isha, the goddess of the natural world. While the present co-rulers of the High Elves rarely lead their armies in war, they are still as essential in a leadership capacity as the Phoenix Kings and Everqueens of the past.
Ulthuan is divided up into smaller kingdoms, each ruled by a Prince. The princes make up a council that selects the new Phoenix King when one is needed.
